Thai Karen (Kariang, Yang), hill tribes live on hills in northern Thailand. Twenty years ago, Most of the hill tribes earned their living by growing the Opium poppies.

Today, they are involved in farming other crops and creating beautiful silverwork and handwoven fabric. The hill tribes have been supported through the efforts of Our Majesty, King Rama IX, and the late Princess Mother who introduced a crop substitution program.
